Congratulations Mrs. Hunstad!
We will miss you🐝 Administrator Ave

Dear Bee Families,

As this week draws to a close, my heart is filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. It has been an absolute honor to serve as your principal and to be a part of this beautiful community.

Our school, with its vibrant spirit and buzzing energy, has been a place of joy, learning, and growth. I have been so inspired by the dedication of our teachers, the creativity of our students, and the unwavering support of our parents and guardians. Together, we have formed a true community where everyone feels valued and encouraged to reach their full potential.

I will cherish the memories of countless school events, from spirited community events to heartwarming celebrations. I will miss the laughter in the hallways, the excitement in the classrooms, and the sense of belonging that permeates every corner of our school.

As I embark on a new chapter, I want to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you. Thank you for your trust, cooperation, and unwavering belief in the power of education. Your support has made my time here truly unforgettable.

I wish you all a wonderful remainder of the school year.

📑FCPS News 🍂 November Is National Family Engagement Month

Family Engagement Month is a time to remember that families are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers.

The FCPS Family Academy was created to support the continued success and well-being of each and every student within the FCPS community. The Academy offers a variety of positive and engaging learning opportunities and meaningful connections to transform the FCPS experience into a welcoming environment for all families.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Pillar B: Vibrant Home, School, and Community Partnerships, reminds us to empower families through trusting partnerships that sustain a safe, inclusive culture for learning.

Family Orientation Seminar

This interactive orientation seminar provides information about FCPS, the links between family engagement and student achievement, school staff you should know, and programs and technology considerations for families. The orientation also includes a helpful discussion for families who are new to the United States.

Sessions in English will be held online on Tuesday, November 12, at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, December 10, at 6 p.m.; and Thursday, December 19, at 6 p.m. Register in advance

Visit the Family Academy catalog page for dates this orientation will be offered in Korean and Spanish.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as a tutor. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource to families.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Families Reunite Workshops

Family and School Partnerships offers a course for Spanish-speaking immigrant families who are going through the reunification process. It is designed for parents/caregivers and children who have lived apart for at least one year and were recently reunited.

The six-hour Zoom course takes place over three consecutive weeks. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Tuesdays, November 12, 19, and 26; 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Mondays, December 2, 9, and 16; 6:30-8:30 p.m.

We encourage families to attend every session to fully benefit from the program. Register for Families Unite and learn more about FCPS’ Immigrant Family Reunification Program

We appreciate you!

Town of Herndon Mayoral Candidate Forum

Administrator Ave

Dear Bee Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. As the leaves begin to change and the days grow shorter, we're excited to share some important updates about our school community.

Kiss and Ride Safety

Please remember to drive slowly and cautiously during our Kiss and Ride times. Your safety and the safety of our students are our top priority. Additionally, we kindly request that all students wear seat belts while being transported to and from school.

Cooler Weather

With the cooler temperatures approaching, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing for the weather. Sweatshirts, jackets, and hats can make a big difference in their comfort. Don't forget to label all of your child's belongings with their name to help prevent lost items.

Principal Coffee

Join us for our upcoming Principal Coffee next week! We're looking forward to connecting with you and discussing the Advanced Academic Program and Title 1. Stay afterward for a PTA meeting. See you on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 5:45.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

It's that time again for Parent-Teacher Conferences! These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to discuss your child's progress and set goals for the upcoming months. If you haven't already heard from your child's teacher, please reach out to schedule a conference.

Amazon Wish List and Donations

We're always grateful for donations to help support our students. Please consider checking out our Amazon Wish List, where we've listed items that would be beneficial for our bees. We are in need of donations of extra clothing for students who have accidents or need a change of clothes. Your generosity makes a significant difference in the lives of our students.

Deliveries for Students

We kindly request that you refrain from delivering yourself or using Uber Eats/Door Dash for fast food to students during the school day. While we understand the desire to treat your child, outside food can disrupt our classroom routines, expose allergies to students, and potentially lead to unhealthy eating habits.

Town of Herndon Mayoral Forum

It was great to see so many parents at the Mayoral Candidate Forum last week. Thank you for saying hi,and it was nice seeing so many smiling faces.

As always, we are a team. Please reach out with any questions or celebrations you may have.

Warmly,

Mrs. Hunstad

Mrs. Elizabeth Scheurer
Mrs. Jennifer Skerker

🏫NO School for Students
Monday, October 14
Office Closed until Noon

Monday, October 14,  is a staff development day.  There is no school for students.  The office will be closed until 12:00pm for an all staff meeting.  School will resume on Tuesday, October 15 at the normal time.

🍔Important Herndon ES Food Policy Reminder
for Parents and Guardians

Dear HES families,

We need your help. Recently we have seen an influx of outside food (Chick-fil-a, Wing Stop, Moe’s etc.) being delivered or dropped off for students. This causes additional work for our office staff and can create jealousy among students. Additionally, we are cautious of allergies.

Please do not drop off outside food for your child or set up an Uber Eats/Door Dash type delivery.  Students are welcome to pack a lunch and bring it in or go through the food line.

The exception is for a special occasion; if you bring outside food, please stay with your child during their lunchtime. Do not bring additional outside food for friends in the class.

As always, thank you for your support.

Warmly,

HES Administrative Team

🚧Plan ahead! Roadwork Near Herndon ES

The week October 7th – 11th, the Town of Herndon will connect the watermain in our area to the new water system. This includes the new connection at the Fillmore St and Dranesville Road intersection which will require a temporary closure of through traffic on Fillmore Street from Grant Street to Dranesville
Road. That work is scheduled for October 10th. During that time, Dranesville Road will be reduced to one way traffic at the Fillmore Street intersection. This will likely impact the morning bus schedule but may be finished before afternoon buses.

Please plan ahead and leave yourself plenty of time if you plan to use Kiss and Ride or visit Herndon ES.

🍂HES Fun Spirit Days for October!

Fairfax County Public Schools will participate in Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9, in an effort to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools.

Students and employees are encouraged to bike or walk to school and work, where safe to do so, on October 9. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school. Check school newsletters for local plans for the day.

🍔Important Herndon ES Food Policy Reminder

Dear HES families,

We need your help. Recently we have seen an influx of outside food (Chick-fil-a, Wing Stop, Moe’s etc.) being delivered or dropped off for students. This causes additional work for our office staff and can create jealousy among students. Additionally, we are cautious of allergies.

Please do not drop off outside food for your child or set up an Uber Eats/Door Dash type delivery.

The exception is for a special occasion; if you bring outside food, please stay with your child during their lunchtime. Do not bring additional outside food for friends in the class.

As always, thank you for your support.

Warmly,

HES Administrative Team

Mrs. Candace Hunstad
Mrs. Elizabeth Baxter
Mr. Greg Brotemarkle
Mrs. Elizabeth Scheurer

contacting the school testing coordinator Cheryl Day [email protected]
• This is only for students who already took that assessment in a previous

Dear Bee Families,

We hope this letter finds you well. Our bees are learning and growing, and we are off to a great start. As the school year continues, we want to remind you of a few important items.

Attendance Awareness Month September is Attendance Awareness Month. We encourage you to please keep your child home only when they are truly ill. Regular attendance is crucial for your child's academic success.

Hispanic Heritage Month We are excited to begin celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. This month-long celebration honors the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Our diversity makes our school community so special.

Playground Access Please be reminded that students who walk home are no longer permitted to play on the playground after dismissal. This change is to ensure the safety of all students.

Library Book Checkouts We kindly request that families ensure their child's library books are returned in the same condition that they were brought home. This helps us maintain our library collection for our bees who love to read.

Teacher Conferences Teachers will be reaching out to schedule parent-teacher conferences. These conferences provide an opportunity to discuss your child's progress and set goals for the year. More communication to come.

Our Staff Is Amazing Help us celebrate them by filling out an FCPS Cares.

As always we are a team. Let us know what questions or celebrations you may have.

Warmly,

HES Administrative Team

🌟Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

🎉National Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15) provides an opportunity to learn more about Hispanic culture.

Fairfax Fiesta, Fairfax County’s Annual Hispanic Heritage celebration, will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Culmore Community Library. This free, family-friendly event welcomes guests of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy cultural performances and entertainment; an artisan market featuring handmade goods from local vendors; children’s activities such as face painting, crafts, and games; and cultural foods. Visit Celebrate Fairfax's website for more information.

The Fairfax County Public Library will host several events throughout the month including performances, crafts, and games. You can view a list of events on their website.

Herndon ES Library Assistant Joanne Lyons
Recognized in FCPS CARES July/August 2024

Joanne Lyons received an FCPS CARES for July/August 2024. See the FCPS CARES submission below:

Mrs. Lyons works as an IA in the library at Herndon ES. She truly exemplifies what it means to CARE about her students! Each day, she greets all with loving smiles and hugs. Her face lights up at the sight of our Herndon Bees. When a student needs a little extra TLC - she’s there to comfort and encourage with love. Mrs. Lyons has also been known to supply students with what they need to start the year off right- shiny new backpacks and shoes included. She spends many weekends cheering students on at soccer games when parents can’t make it due to work obligations. Her selfless and supportive nature are so wonderful and I, among many others, feel she deserves recognition! HES is so lucky to have her. We love you Mrs. Lyons!

🚍 School Transportation Information

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following kiss-and-ride procedures and being patient while waiting for school buses.

If a bus is delayed, parents/caregivers may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Visit the Transportation Services webpage to find out who to contact with specific questions.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

🚗Student Pickup and Transportation Change Procedures

Creating a sense of calm and routine at the end of the day is very important for our students and teachers.  They are completing lessons and getting ready for dismissal.

Here are procedures that we have in place that create the least amount of disruption to the classroom during the day.

  • Send a note in your child’s backpack, email the teacher, let the office know that your child will be dismissed early.
  • Change of Transportation form on home page of website: all online requests must be made by 12:00 pm.  For any changes or emergencies after 12:00 pm, please contact the office at 703-326-3100.
  • All changes in transportation and student pick-ups must be made by 3:30pm.  We will not be able to honor any changes after that time unless it is a dire emergency.

Please let your child and the school know the plan that morning.  They will appreciate it and we will too!

🎒Please Label your Child's Belongings

We have been back to school for less than a week and we already have a few items in lost and found.  These belongings do not have a name.

Please label their belongings such as lunch box, backpack, water bottles, sweatshirts and jackets that they can take off when they get warm.

Until they get into the routine, please check when they get home from school if they have everything.  If not, please ask them to check lost and found or the office at school.

Labeling them is the best way to help us return them to your child!

✔️ Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

During the first weeks of the year, schools mail and email caregivers many forms to complete. Several of the most important ones are below:

  1. Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find forms and updates.  If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child's school for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account Registration webpage.
  2. Update Contact Information: Provide your cell phone number and email in ParentVUE for weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS. To update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.
  3. Digital Resources Consent: Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent/caregiver consent before they can be used by students. the Parent Digital Consent system online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account. Visit the Parent Digital Consent Directions webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.
  4. Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R): This document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when they log in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned as soon as possible.
  5. Opt-Outs: The Opt-Out booklet is online or available from your child’s school. FCPS provides explanations of the rights as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version.

Paper forms can be signed and returned to your child’s school.

📝School Supply Lists for 2024-25

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Herndon ES for the 2024-25 school year!

Our teachers have prepared a list of supplies that your child will need for school.  You may shop for these during the summer and bring them with you to the Back to School Bash on Thursday, August 15

Click here to access the grade level school supply lists on our Herndon ES website.

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy and Storage Pilot

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call their school’s main office.

At the May 9, 2024 School Board meeting, the School Board directed the superintendent to develop a pilot program for cell phone storage at FCPS. Starting with the 2024-25 school year, select middle schools will be cell phone free and each student will use a personal storage pouch. Select high schools will be cell phone free during all instructional times by using cell phone storage units in each classroom. Find more information on our cell phone storage webpage.

💻Catch Up on Your Child’s Classwork in Schoology

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online, to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects, and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology parent account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after Monday, August 19. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS ParentVUE account. Find more information on how to log in and use Schoology.

🚸Kindergarten and New Student Registration for the 2024-25 School Year

We're excited to welcome our newest Herndon ES Bees for next year!  A child may enter kindergarten for this coming school year if he or she turns five on or before September 30, 2024.

If you have not registered your child, we are scheduling appointments for all rising kindergartners.  We have Spanish translators in the office and can arrange for other languages as well.  Please contact Shermin Sirajudin, our Student Information Assistant, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 703-326-3100.

⏰ Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

Providing an excellent education to all students and meeting individual student needs requires appropriate planning time for teachers. This means teachers need a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers.

With that in mind, FCPS has developed a division wide plan for seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students in the 2024-25 school year.

Early release Mondays for elementary schools in the following pyramids are planned for the dates below: Herndon, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield.

Herndon Elementary will release at 1:05pm on the following dates.

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/3ZQqThCgButjMvkN9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Herndon Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

👨🏽‍💻Online Verification Update

The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students. The enrolling parent will be able to access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account.

The enrolling parent must have an active SIS ParentVUE Account to access and complete the OVU packet.

Parents can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting their child’s school or by submitting a Parent Support Request form (select “SIS Parent” in the Application dropdown and “Account Activation” from the Inquiry dropdown) for assistance with this process.

If you are not home during the Welcome Walk, the teachers will leave a door hanger that contains the teacher assignment and class information.  Out of area students will receive a telephone “visit”. First day packets will also be delivered, if you are home. Please call the school by 4:00 pm, on Wednesday, August 14th, if you will not be home and do not want the hanger left on your door.

También se les entregará los paquetes del primer día, si está en casa. Si no va a estar en casa y no quiere que el colgador quede en la puerta.  Llame a la escuela hasta las 4:00 pm, el miercoles 14 de agosto.

Dear Bee Families,

As the summer comes to a close, we are buzzing with excitement to welcome you back for another fantastic school year at Herndon Elementary, home of the Bees! We hope you've enjoyed a restful break and are ready to embark on a new academic adventure.

First and foremost, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our amazing custodians. Their hard work and dedication have ensured that our school is sparkling clean and ready for our students' return. We also want to thank our diligent office staff for their unwavering support to our families throughout the summer, answering questions, assisting with registration, and ensuring a smooth transition back to school.

As we prepare for the first day, we want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. Consistent attendance is crucial for your child's academic success and helps establish a routine that promotes learning and social development. Every day counts, and we are here to support you in ensuring that your child attends school regularly and on time.

A special note for our kindergarten families: we are excited to welcome our youngest Bees! Please help your child practice saying their first name clearly, as this will help our staff in making sure they feel comfortable and secure during their first days at school.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. Thank you for being a part of our amazing community. Let's make this school year the best one yet!

With warm regards,

🤕Student Accident Insurance Program

At the beginning of each school year, parents and/or guardians should be informed of the Student Accident Insurance Program, K&K Student Accident Insurance. Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents can purchase “at school” accident insurance or “24 hour” accident insurance (12 months a year). This is a low-cost insurance program for families to defray medical or dental expenses that results from an accident involving their child. More information can be found on the FCPS public site at Voluntary Student Insurance .

Dear Bee Families,

We hope you are enjoying a restful and enjoyable summer! As we gear up for another exciting school year, we wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude and share some important updates with you.

First and foremost, we want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible custodial team. They have been working tirelessly throughout the summer to ensure our school building is sparkling clean and ready to welcome our bees and staff back. Their dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for our bee community.

We are thrilled to announce that this year, our school will become an AVID school! AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program designed to help bees develop the skills they need to be successful in college or any career they choose. AVID focuses on promoting a culture of college and career readiness, emphasizing critical thinking, organization, and academic skills. We are excited about the opportunities this program will bring to our bees and look forward to seeing them soar to new heights.

To support our AVID initiative, we are humbly asking for donations of any military, college, or career swag/paraphernalia you may wish to contribute. These items will be used to create an inspiring environment that motivates our bees to dream big and achieve their goals. If you have any items you would like to donate, please drop them off at the school office.

We also want to remind you to mark your calendars for our Back-to-School Bash (Open House), on Thursday, August 15th from 5:00 pm- 7:00 pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and see their classroom. We can’t wait to see you there!

Lastly, we are still accepting donations from our Amazon Wish List. Your generous contributions help us provide the best possible resources and experiences for our bees. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a significant impact.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our bee community. Together, we can make this school year the best one yet!
