April 7-11 HES Annual Heritage Night!
April 10
5:30-7:30pm Decorate for Heritage Night!

We would love for families to decorate a paper doll in their heritage to display at school for Heritage Night, Thursday, April 10 at 5:30pm!  Paper dolls were sent home in students’ backpacks. If your child needs another one, please have him/her tell the teacher.  We have them in the main office.

Please cut out the doll first. Next, complete the information on the back of the doll, this identifies the owner.  Now you are ready to start creating your doll.

You may use whatever you have available (cloth, ribbons, construction paper, markers and crayons, etc.) to create your special person. You can create the face by drawing and coloring it or by placing your child’s picture on it.

Have your child bring the decorated doll back to school for our display.

FCPS News 🛑 Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).

Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.

According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.

We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

Happy Public Schools Week!   Message from the Principal 🏫On-Time Attendance Matters

Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time every day is important.

Top 5 benefits of students arriving on time to school:
1. Consistency with Routines: Students benefit from starting the day with established procedures, creating a sense of stability and readiness to learn.
2. Maximized Learning Time: No missed instructions or lessons which lead to better academic performance and outcomes.
3. Stronger Social Connections: Morning interactions help build friendships.
4. Positive Behavioral Development: Punctuality fosters responsibility and discipline.
5. Reduced Anxiety: Starting the day on time reduces stress.
Thank you for your continued partnership. If you're facing any challenges with your child(ren)'s school transportation, please let us know how we can help.

🐝Welcome back and Happy New Year 2025!  Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it!  FCPS’ website is generally the first place where we will announce an emergency weather closing. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated. Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and plan for childcare if needed.

⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Your school’s principal will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather. If you need assistance getting cold weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Please Label your Child's Belongings

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  To prevent a robust lost and found in 2025, we are asking our parents and guardians to make sure all of their children's belongings are clearly labeled.

Please label their belongings such as hat, gloves, lunch box, backpack, water bottles, sweatshirts and jackets with their first and name.  Take a photo in case you need to come to the school and look through lost and found.

Labeling them is the best way to help us return them to your child!

Thank you Herndon ES PTA!

We would like to thank our Herndon ES PTA volunteers and parents for the delicious winter luncheon and cookie bar they treated the staff to this week!

They provide so much for our school including back to school events, themed bingo nights, school book fairs, clubs, movie nights, donuts with grownups, cookie decorating party, special breakfasts, lunches, snack for our teachers, staff, and substitutes, and much more.

They are very welcoming to all who would like to join in and help!
