HES-Eco Club Purple Martin Team Wins 1st Place in "Caring for our Watersheds" Competition
Congratulations to the Herndon Elementary Eco-Club Purple Martin Team, inspired and led by their teacher, Mark Moseley, who won top prize of $1000 for their project and presentation in Earth Force's Caring for our Watersheds Chesapeake Bay competition.
The Purple Martin bird population in the Herndon area is declining due to habitat loss. Herndon ES students plan to help restore the population by erecting a Purple Martin Tower at two locations- one at Herndon Elementary School, and the other at Lake Frederick, VA. The goal is to attract Purple Martin birds to both of these locations. This 5th grade team from Herndon ES competed with middle school teams from across the Chesapeake Bay Area.
Nutrien is proud to work with Earth Force to offer "Caring for our Watersheds" in the Chesapeake Bay. Taking care of the environment requires more than simply talking about it. It calls for stewardship and a lighter footprint. As a result, Nutrien launched an environmental program for students called “Caring for our Watersheds” (CFW).
Vince Meldrum, the CEO of Earth Force, said, “This program gives young people the opportunity to be change agents in protecting vital water resources. We are so proud of the young people who created innovative solutions this year.”
The Chesapeake Bay Watershed spans parts of Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and DC.
The Purple Martin Tower Team will raise its first Purple Martin Tower at Herndon Elementary this summer. For more information, please contact Mark Moseley at [email protected].
