The Lion King Kids at Herndon ES! Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families,

As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we wanted to take a moment to provide you with some important updates and reminders from the administrative team.

**State Testing Season:**

It's that time of year again – state testing (SOLs) season! We understand that this can be a stressful time for students, parents, and teachers alike, but it's also an opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work and knowledge. To ensure your child is ready for state testing, here are a few tips:

- Encourage them to get a good night's sleep before each test day.

- Provide them with a nutritious breakfast to fuel their brains.

- Remind them to read each question carefully and take their time.

- Encourage them to do their best and stay positive!

**Nutrition Reminder:**

We kindly remind all parents that, per our school's wellness policy, fast food meals cannot be sent or dropped off for your children during school hours. We believe in promoting healthy eating habits among our students and appreciate your cooperation in providing nutritious meals for your child's well-being.

**Importance of Attendance:**

As always, attendance is crucial to your child's academic success. Regular attendance ensures that they have the opportunity to engage fully in classroom activities, receive instruction, and build important social connections with their peers. Please make every effort to ensure your child arrives at school on time each day, ready to learn.

**Lost and Found:**

Our lost and found collection is steadily growing, and we want to reunite any misplaced items with their owners before the end of the school year. We encourage families to check the lost and found area located in the main hallway for any items that may belong to their child. Additionally, we recommend labeling your child's belongings to help prevent them from getting lost in the future.

**Lion King Kids:**

Our bees are stars! Thank you to our generous PTA and NextStop Theatre for their partnership. We are so proud of our bees. We can’t wait to see them on Broadway one day!

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in making our school community thrive. As always, we are a team. Please reach out with any questions or celebrations you may have.

Heritage Night
April 25
5:30pm-7:30pm

We would love for families to decorate a paper doll in their heritage to display at school for Heritage Night!  Paper dolls were sent home in students’ backpacks. If your child needs another one, please have him/her tell the teacher.  We have them in the main office.

Please cut out the doll first. Next, complete the information on the back of the doll, this identifies the owner.  Now you are ready to start creating your doll.

You may use whatever you have available (cloth, ribbons, construction paper, markers and crayons, etc.) to create your special person. You can create the face by drawing and coloring it or by placing your child’s picture on it.

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

Dear Bee families,

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At HES, our amazing PTA has been able to purchase approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. Students will be outside with the close supervision of their teacher for no longer than 5 minutes.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Warmly,

HES Administrative Team

Dear Bee Families,

As we approach the end of this week, we wanted to take a moment to remind you to check our lost and found for any misplaced items, particularly clothing. With the changing weather and bustling activities, it's easy for items to get misplaced. Our lost and found is brimming with jackets, sweaters, and other articles waiting to be reclaimed. We encourage you to stop by and retrieve any missing items.

Additionally, we are thrilled to celebrate the exceptional attendance of our students from 2nd quarter! To honor their efforts, we hosted a special attendance celebration last week, filled with donuts and certificates in recognition for their outstanding attendance records. We thank you, parents, for your continued support in encouraging regular attendance and punctuality.

As we gear up for spring break, we want to remind all families to enjoy this well-deserved time off. While it's a time for relaxation and rejuvenation, we also encourage students to keep reading. Whether it's delving into a captivating novel, exploring new interests, or discovering the wonders of the world through literature, we hope reading and playing outside will be an integral part of your spring break adventures. We wish you all a safe and enjoyable break, filled with cherished memories and enriching experiences.

As always, we are a team. Please reach out with any questions or celebrations you may have.

FCPS News Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, Herndon Elementary is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

HES Interim Reports, Bus Driver Appreciation, Renovation, Volunteers, and Attendance  Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families

As we approach the halfway point of the third quarter, we wanted to take a moment to provide you with some important updates and reminders.

Firstly, as interims will be coming out soon, we encourage you to stay tuned for updates on your child's progress. Interims serve as an opportunity to reflect on your child's academic journey thus far and to address any areas where additional support may be needed. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring the success of all our students. If you have any questions, celebrations  or concerns please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher.

In the spirit of February being the month of appreciation, we would like to extend our gratitude to our hardworking bus drivers. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in safely transporting our students to and from school each day, and we are incredibly thankful for their service.

Additionally, we encourage you to take a moment to send a kind note of appreciation to your child's teacher. Your words of encouragement mean a great deal and serve as a source of motivation for our educators. You can also help us celebrate our staff by filling out an FCPS Cares here.

We are currently waiting for our  FCPS Facilities team to provide us with an update about the upcoming renovation of our school. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to create an even better learning environment for our students.

We are always in need of volunteers in various areas of the school, including the cafeteria and library. If you are interested in contributing your time and talents, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Lastly, we want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. Every day counts in your child's education, and we encourage you to continue to prioritize attendance and punctuality. Together, we can ensure that all our students have the opportunity to thrive academically and socially.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making our school community a great place to learn and grow.

As always, we are a team. Please reach out with any questions or celebrations you may have.

Warmly,

The Herndon Elementary Administrative Team

Celebrating Black History Month with Music

Music teacher, Riccardo Emilien, and his 4th grade students are celebrating Black History Month with a nod to New Orleans funky blues.  Watch the video here!

Exploring Black American Music's Lineage - From Congo Square to Today

In honor of Black History Month, Herndon ES music teacher, Riccardo Emilien is exploring black American music's lineage from Congo Square to today.  "This February, I wanted to start each day having listeners immerse themselves in the captivating journey of Black American music. I’ve curated a daily playlist - starting with the vibrant rhythms of Congo Square and tracing the evolution through genres like blues, jazz, hip-hop, and more. I hope students, staff, and parents discover the fascinating connections that weave together these diverse styles, revealing the enduring power of African roots that resonate even in Central and South American cultures – our largest population.

I believe it’s important for us to listen, learn, and celebrate the cultural richness passed down through generations and I hope people look forward to hearing the daily playlists and connect with the shared spirit of this music!"
