Dear Parent/Caregiver,

FCPS supports students who need to take time during the school day to practice as their faith requires. If your student needs to be excused to pray, please contact your child’s teacher.

If you have any concerns or need to discuss your student’s stated requirement, please contact an administrator so we can make sure we are providing the best possible educational experience for your student.

FCPS News 🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to their school. Most schools have links to their attendance email or notification systems on their homepages. If you are unsure how to report an absence, please call your school’s front office.

Watch a video with tips on understanding FCPS' school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Elementary Continuum of Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students. Through the continuum, students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

Teachers, Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs), and school administrators work together to provide the following levels of service at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons.
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor is for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students are strong in a specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these area(s) by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
  • Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Services, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic needs in multiple subject areas in addition to specific subject differentiation. They need part-time AAP services.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Full-Time Services, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

  • Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
  • Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Advanced Academic Program Services

Multiple data points are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom. No pieces of the data are weighted in the holistic screening process.

Eligibility decisions for subject-specific advanced differentiation and part-time services are made by a committee at the local school, and screening is ongoing throughout the school year. To refer for subject-specific advanced differentiation and part-time services, submit the AAP School-Based Referral Form to the AART at the local school.

Eligibility decisions for full-time services are made by the countywide central selection committee.

Screening for full-time services occurs during specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.
    • The fall screening referral window is from the first day of school - October 15.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student.
    • The spring screening referral window is from the first day of school - December 15.

Please do not wait for test scores before submitting a referral for your student in Grades 2-7. Referrals submitted after the full-time services referral windows noted above will not be accepted.

Referral forms for all advanced academic program services are found at https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893.

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Ability Testing

FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration of the holistic screening process for advanced academic services. Test scores are not weighted or prioritized in the holistic screening process.

  • All students in Grade 1 take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT).
  • All students in Grade 2 take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
  • NNAT and/or CogAT may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score during the regularly scheduled testing windows.

Parents or guardians may request a one-time retest of either the CogAT or the NNAT in grades 3-6. Requests must be made during the fall testing windows. Please contact the Herndon ES testing coordinator, Cheryl Day [email protected], no later than September 15 to request the CogAT or October 15 for the NNAT.

Elementary Parent Information Meeting

A parent information meeting will be held at Herndon Elementary School on Tuesday October 3rd at 6:00 PM. The AART will provide information about levels of service, explain the screening processes, and answer questions about advanced academic services.

Young Scholars

The FCPS Young Scholars model seeks to identify and affirm, from an early age, students with high academic potential from groups historically underrepresented in advanced academic programming. The goal of the model is to eliminate barriers for Young Scholars’ access to and success in advanced academic opportunities in elementary, middle, and high school.

Twice-Exceptional (2e)

Some gifted students with advanced learning needs may also have a learning disability. Twice-exceptional (or “2e”) students need strengths-based instruction while receiving advanced programming. The FCPS continuum of AAP services provides multiple entry points to meet student needs while also supporting their learning challenges. FCPS has created a 2e handbook to help schools and families understand how to identify and serve 2e students. You can find these resources by going to www.fcps.edu and searching “2e.”

Advanced Academic Programs in Middle and High School

Middle School AAP

Advanced coursework at the middle school level is open enrollment. All students are encouraged to enroll in at least one Honors course each school year in an area of strength and/or interest.

Students eligible for the full-time services have the option to attend the middle school center assigned to their address or enroll in Honors courses in the four core content areas at their base school.

High School AAP

Advanced coursework at the high school level is open enrollment. All students are encouraged to enroll in at least one Honors course beginning in Grade 9. Each high school in FCPS offers AP, IB or Dual Enrollment courses which begin in Grade 10 or 11, depending on the program and the school.

Additional information about middle and high school services may be found on the Advanced Academic Programs web page: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.

FCPS News ✔️ Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

During the first weeks of the year, schools mail and email caregivers many forms to complete. Several of the most important ones are below:

  1. Digital Resources Consent: Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent/caregiver consent before they can be used by students. Find the list of resources which require consent on the Digital Resources - Parent Consent page. This page also includes directions on how to provide permission so your child(ren) can access all resources provided by their teachers.
  2. Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R): This document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when they log in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned by Friday, September 29.
  3. Opt-Outs: The Opt-Out booklet is online or available from your child’s school. It contains information on:
    1. Parents’ rights to inspect and consent or opt out before their child participates in certain surveys.
    2. Parents’ rights to inspect instructional materials.
    3. Rules regarding student records and disclosure of student information (including photo/video of students) and the right to opt out.
    4. Parents’ rights to opt out of the Social Emotional Learning Screener, physical exams not required by state law, career or social emotional counseling, Library Equity Access Pass Project, and/or Tutor.com.
    5. The process by which complaints may be filed if parents or students believe their rights have been violated.

Paper forms can be signed and returned to your child’s school.

🧠 How to Access Free Resources from Tutor.com

FCPS students continue to have unlimited access to live, 24/7, one-on-one online tutoring services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. Detailed information and FAQs are available on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services webpage.

Students can access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following: Elementary - How It Works and Middle & High - How It Works. No School for Labor Day Break  September 1 and 4

Friday, September 1, and Monday, September 4, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. The Code of Virginia requires schools opening before Labor Day to be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!!

Parents have a huge influence on students when it comes to attendance.  Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. When students miss too many days of school, they fall behind and struggle to keep up with their classmates. Whether the days missed are due to illness, truancy or for any other reason, the end result for the student is the same — learning time is lost. Children and adolescents will get sick at times and may need to stay at home, but we want to work with you to help minimize the number of days your student is absent from school.

Please watch these videos to learn more:

Attendance: Students Rights and Responsibilities (English)

Derechos y responsabilidades de los estudiantes: asistencia (español)

Here are some ways you can help your child throughout the school year:

  • Maintain regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
  • Talk to your child about why going to school everyday is important unless they are sick.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.
  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation or health problems.

It takes a community for our school to thrive!!

Health Information and
Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE-71) and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health-Related Needs.

For SY23-24, these forms will be required for all students. Enrolling parents/guardians who have a SIS ParentVUE account may submit them electronically by using the Online Verification/Update packet

For families without SIS ParentVue accounts, forms can be located in the Back to School packets and on the General Registration Forms page.

FCPS News When a Nap Isn’t a Nap

Overdoses touch people and communities in many ways. International Overdose Awareness Day, August 31st, 2023, is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose and remember those who have died without stigma while also acknowledging the grief of their loved ones. An overdose means having more of a drug(s) than the body can handle. Unfortunately, opioid misuse is now the leading cause of unnatural death in Fairfax County according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Don’t allow it to go unnoticed in your home, in our community.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as Percocet, oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others (NIH).

Opioids slow the central nervous system to produce a calming effect. When taken in excess amounts or in combination with other central nervous system depressants, they greatly suppress breathing and the heart rate.

Signs of an overdose include:  Loss of consciousness.  Unresponsive to outside stimulus. Awake, but unable to talk.  Breathing is very slow and shallow, erratic, or has stopped.  For lighter skinned people, the skin tone turns bluish purple, for darker skinned people, it turns grayish or ashen.  Choking sounds, or a snore-like gurgling noise (sometimes called the “death rattle”). Vomiting. Body is very limp.  Face is very pale or clammy.  Fingernails and lips turn blue or purplish black.  Pulse (heartbeat) is slow, erratic, or not there at all

A person may appear as though they are just napping. It may be difficult to tell if someone is napping or potentially overdosing, especially if they are snoring.

If someone is making unfamiliar sounds while “sleeping” it is worth trying to wake him or her up. Many loved ones of users thought a person was snoring, when in fact they were overdosing. These situations are a missed opportunity to intervene and save a life. Snoring and gurgling can indicate that a person is having trouble breathing. With substance use, especially with opioids which slow down the systems of the body, snoring may indicate a serious and potentially life-threatening obstruction of the airway.

In the context of substance use, snoring is not something that should be seen as “normal”. Don’t let someone “sleep it off” if they are snoring; this may be a sign of a significant and life-threatening emergency. You should attempt to wake them immediately.

If they do wake up, then the snoring (airway obstruction) will resolve. If they do not wake up, call 911 immediately.

As we are about to embark on another school year, it is important to bring awareness to our families and students about what to look for in regards to substance use. Take confidence in the fact that you know what is normal for your student and what is not in terms of their behavior.

Potential signs that something may be off with your student: A student who starts acting withdrawn or seems tired, depressed, or mad for no reason • Changing friends • Not caring about personal appearance • Slipping grades, skipping classes • Losing interest in favorite activities • Behavioral or academic trouble at school or with the law • Changes in eating or sleeping habits • Not getting along with family members • Lying or stealing

These signs do not always mean there is a drug or alcohol problem, but they may be cause for concern. Try to find out what is going on. Do not be afraid to have open and non-judgmental conversations with your student. Get to know their teachers, friends, and their friends' parents. A new school year means new opportunities. Let’s work together to make this year great.

Student Pickup and Transportation Change Procedures

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Creating a sense of calm and routine at the end of the day is very important for our students and teachers.  They are completing lessons and getting ready for dismissal.

Here are procedures that we have in place that create the least amount of disruption to the classroom during the day.

  • Send a note in your child’s backpack, email the teacher, let the office know that your child will be dismissed early.
  • Change of Transportation form on home page of website: all online requests must be made by 12:00 pm.  For any changes or emergencies after 12:00 pm, please contact the office at 703-326-3100.
  • All changes in transportation and student pick-ups must be made by 3:30pm.  We will not be able to honor any changes after that time unless it is a dire emergency.

Please let your child and the school know the plan that morning.  They will appreciate it and we will too!

Thank you for your cooperation.

Warmly,

Herndon ES Administration Team

Please Label your Child's Belongings

We have been back to school for less than a week and we already have a few items in lost and found.  These belongings do not have a name.

Please label their belongings such as lunch box, backpack, water bottles, sweatshirts and jackets that they can take off when they get warm.

Until they get into the routine, please check when they get home from school if they have everything.  If not, please ask them to check lost and found or the office at school.

Labeling them is the best way to help us return them to your child!

Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families,

We have had an amazing week welcoming staff and students back to the building. Thank you for participating in our Welcome Walk and Back to School Bash. There was so much joy and excitement in our school as students met their new teachers and visited classrooms yesterday!

We wanted to take the time out to thank our PTA for the pizza, water, popsicles, and deejay. A great time was had by all and the weather was perfect. We also want to Trinity Presbyterian Church for hosting three Bookmobile events in our community this summer. Many students and families walked away from these events with lots and new books and big smiles!

We continue to work hard on hiring for the school year and are still in need of classroom monitors. If you know of any possible candidates please encourage them to send their resumes to one of us.

We are incredibly excited about our upcoming building renovation, scheduled to begin late spring, 2024. We will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available!

We can’t wait to see all of our students back in school this Monday, August 21. You will be allowed to walk your student to class on the first 2 days of school. Please give them a quick hug and goodbye. Our teachers are ready to set their routines and procedures for the coming year. Please also make sure you have communicated with your child’s teacher how your student will be going home.

Do you think our staff is as great as we do? Give them some appreciation by submitting an FCPS Cares

As always, we are a team! Please reach out with any questions or compliments you would like to share.

Warmly,

Herndon ES Administrative Team

First Day of School Monday, August 21

Kiss & Ride, Bus Loop, and End of the Day Student Pickup Important Information

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Herndon ES takes the safety and security of all of our students, staff, families, bus drivers, and other Kiss and Ride drivers very seriously.  There is a specific system in place for Kiss & Ride that we all need to follow.

  • Always wait until a staff member is present and you are at the designated area to let your child out of the car.
  • Do not attempt to pass another car or bus, enter the bus loop, or let your child out of the car at a different location during this time.
  • The speed bumps were installed to slow us down.  We want everyone to enter and exit safely.
  • Need to check your child out at the end of the day?  If you know in advance, please send in a note so that the teacher is aware. Please come to the office no later than 3:30pm.    It is very busy in the classrooms as the teachers and students are closing out the end of the day.
  • Kiss & Ride, please use this link to request a placard for your car. When you get this card, please clearly display it on front window/dashboard to help staff  with process efficiency.

         Thank you!

Safety Drill Message for Parents & Guardians

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first month of school is full of learning and establishing community and routines. In addition, we are required to instruct students on emergency preparedness drills throughout the school year.

Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly.

These drills are short and precise so that our students and staff are familiar with the procedures in the event of an emergency. Below you will find a list of the safety routines that we practice throughout the year.

Type of Drill:  Required Frequency

Fire Safety Drills:

We will have 2 drills in the first 20 days of school. Then once a month from October-June.

Lockdown Drill:

One lockdown drill in the first 20 days of school One additional lockdown drill after the first 60 days of school

Tornado Drill

Once a year in March (second semester)

Bus Emergency Drill

One during the first 30 instructional days of the first semester and the other during the first 30 instructional days of the second semester.

📘 Get Ready for Summer Reading!

The Fairfax County Public Library understands the importance of summer reading. Summer learning loss, or the summer slide, is when children forget learned reading skills because they are no longer using them regularly. Reading and participating in engaging reading activities throughout the summer are two effective ways to combat summer learning loss.

Fairfax Library will kick off their annual summer reading program with a Summer Reading Festival at the Chantilly Regional Library on Saturday, June 24, 4-7 p.m. Families can enjoy games and crafts, face painting, bounce houses, a mini zoo, caricatures, food, and other activities.

We are proud of our little bees flying off to the next level!!

Huge kudos to all that made it possible!!!!

WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Educate Fairfax project is a rousing success at Herndon Elementary!

This past Fall, art teacher, Marianne Estornell, received a grant from Educate Fairfax called Art-trepreneurs: Board Game Design. This project was proposed for 5th grade students to create their own board games based on an existing game, a reinterpretation of a board game or to create a new concept. Students employed their Portrait of a Graduate skills to plan, collaborate, and give constructive feedback to their peers.

Students explored the artwork of artist, Raynard Scott, from the Navajo Nation who reimagined a monopoly game based on the Dineh. His gameboard is made of silver and inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones. Raynard Scott’s Dinetah-poly won 2023 Best in Show at the world-famous Heard Museum Indian Market.

Students constructed their own game boards using pizza boxed and used a variety of materials to create game pieces, dice, cards, and other game mechanics. In addition, students designed and built Scribble Bots, inspired by their games. Once games were completed, students play-tested their games with their peers and learned constructive ways to make suggestions for improving their games. Lastly, students examined how board game designers publish their games to make them ready for sale.

This project was powered by the generosity of Educate Fairfax and Mrs. Estornell and the 5th grade class are truly grateful for this incredible opportunity.
